7 Effective Core Teaching Strategies That You Need To Know

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008 Honey Krumholz

Sometimes teachers may be overloaded with the many different teaching strategies, teaching methods and ideas that they are exposed to.

Please keep in mind that this is your class, your students and only YOU know your own limits.

One thing that I’ve mentioned to my student teachers as well as to my student teacher mentees is to learn from other teachers by observing them teach and read any articles that experienced teachers may have written. At that time they will be in a better position to select the teaching strategies that they are most comfortable with that fit their teaching style.

Let me now briefly describe the “7 Essential Core Teaching Strategies” that I treated as my “Bible” as I taught all grades from Kindergarten through Grade 6 over the past 33 years.

1. Classroom Management is the teaching strategy that I consider to be most important in creating an effective teaching environment to ensure that your lessons will run smoothly and each teaching day will be a success.

Classroom Management covers a wide range of topics from classroom discipline and behavior management to communication strategies both verbal and non-verbal to classroom rules including classroom time management. Implement some of the strategies behind these topics and you’ll be on your way to a successful teaching career.

2. Learn about your students and know what they like and dislike. Recognize their successes and understand their failures. Create a strong relationship with them and they will with you.

3. Continually Encourage and Motivate. Have your students set their own goals, helping them to attain them and then strive for new ones.

4. Create a Strong Teacher Student Relationship. Trust must be earned, show respect, be honest, display compassion, and always be positive. Let students know that they matter to you and hopefully they will follow suit. All this will build self-esteem in your students!

5. Communication with parents is critical. When dealing with parents you must always remember to act very professionally even if you have formed a close bond with a parent. Always be ready to speak and work with parents for the betterment of their child and in some cases this may involve a fair bit of tact when dealing with difficult parents or a difficult situation. You are accountable to the student but parents are also responsible for their child and accountable to you.

6. Accountability is Essential. It is important for you to remember that for each day of the school year you are accountable to your students, as well as their parents. Be accountable to yourself as well and be the best you can be.

7. To be truly successful in this great profession, you must have a real passion for it. A passion to have fun with your students, pass on your knowledge to them and watch them grow throughout the year(s).

These teaching strategies are truly essential but only the tip of the iceberg. As you develop in this great profession, I hope you will agree with me on the importance of my top 7.

Try These Strategies and Have Fun!
