No matter how hard we try there are things, once done, that we are going to have to live with for life. When seeking jobs as we grow up, many firms are under obligation by law and by self preservation to carry out background checks on those who apply. This is to make sure that you have no records of shady deals, misdemeanors, litigation, etc., in your past. If you did, they might never give you that job again.

Only when you have looked beyond the immediately obvious can you claim to have done any kind of background check. An interviewee can look innocent enough on the face but could easily have a criminal past. You might never know if he did not state it on his application and if you don’t look for the information. Yet it is only a matter of time before his attitude begins to affect your business.

It is safe sometimes to be paranoid - it keeps you careful and on your toes. There are times when the habit can be a pain, but not when you are dealing with staff you are about to employ. Even if they won’t be lying outright on their applications, they could still embellish a few details so that they look more like what you’re looking for. In event, employing such could ruin your company if not outright wipe you out.

A disturbing piece of information is the attitude that people have towards background checks. It is true that privacy is concerned, and many citizens are thin-skinned about that, but it is also true that business owners need to protect their interests. People can lie on their applications and there would be no way to find that out without the checks. The only alternate would be to allow the damage to happen first, and that would be a lot more costly.

Reference is a part of the requirement of an applicant during a background check. It contains question like how long does a referee know a particular applicant? It also contains question like, what are the applicants’ strengths and weaknesses.

Because young children will pick up and learn from just about everything around them, you certainly can’t have the wrong kind of people within the same vicinity. People with questionable mental and criminal histories should not be employed as teachers or staff in schools because they could adversely influence the kids. Even if they keep straight faces and their demeanors look like they are all that, a good background check should reveal all you need to know about them.

In the childcare industry, people are most sensitive. You really cannot afford to have the wrong type of people caring and taking care of the young, impressionable and exploitable kids. As their minds seek and soak up information like sponges, nothing that they experience around them if forbidden. Employing caretakers and stewards with histories of violence or questionable conduct could damage their minds forever, so total care must be taken.
