Symptoms of Dehydration: 2 Yellow Alerts

Thursday, October 9th, 2008 Cindy Soto

While there are many dehydration symptoms, the 2 primary ones are so common that you may tend to ignore them.

You really don’t want to ignore them; here’s why.

1 — The yellow alert. You’ve been busy doing your thing, and you find your urine is a darker yellow.

Does this describe you?

Is this a regular occurrence?

2 — Feeling thirsty is a symptom of dehydration. Drink regularly before you feel thirsty.

Because you’re already dehydrated. Your body is short on water and you may start feeling tired.

If you want more energy and vitality, start with your drinking habits.

Are you drinking your water today?

Do you spread it out so you are continuously adding water?

How about if I asked if it’s water you’re drinking? Not Coke or coffee or even Gatorade (which has salt), just water?

If you depend on sports drinks, yes, they have electrolytes (some anyway), but they are still not healthy because of the sodium.

Drink water and plenty of it.

Stay away from the tap water as it has way too much chlorine.

The way you tell if you are drinking enough is that your urine is light yellow or clear.

And what is recommended?

It has been well established that you should drink half your body weight in ounces.

In other words, a person that weighs 150 pounds would need to drink 75 ounces of water each day.

And why spread it out?

The biggest reason is to match your body’s use of water. If you’re being especially active or it’s hot, you will need more than this.

If you know you will be active, it’s better to start drinking before you begin.

The other reason is that the body must maintain a delicate balance all the time.

When you are dry, then drink a lot at once, you’re actually flooding the cells. Not much better for you than being too dry. Your body works more.

Another way you work yourself too much is by drinking during a meal.

This takes energy that could be used for other things.

What do I mean?

The liquid in the meal dilutes the gastric juices that digest the food.

Even without this added stress, digestion is already the most energy intensive process in the body.

It is not that hard to eat food by itself as long as you’re drinking throughout the day.
