How to Create Your Server Backup

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008 Gary Pearson

Sooner or later, your server-for all intents and purposes, that means your computer’s hard drive-will have some kind of failure. It’s inevitable, like death and taxes. Although this is not something that happens often, when it does happen it’s a disaster-unless you have been wise and created a server backup.

Creating a server backup is possible by various means. Simplest of these is manually copying all the necessary and important data on to some other storage media like CDs or DVDs. Most computers today support these functions. Having done that, you can stay relaxed and comfortable, knowing your data is safe.

An alternative approach involves using an external hard disk drive to create a server backup. It is similar to your computer hard disk drive, except you can plug it externally using USB ports or comparable slots. You can copy whatever you require on to the external disk. This way if your PC hard disk crashes, you will have all your data safely tucked in your external drive.

If you are in business, then you could consider setting up a RAID. A RAID is a redundant array of independent discs (the “i” used to stand for “inexpensive”, but that got changed when prices on everything having to do with computers came down). In other words, a RAID utilizes several hard drives at once, and they each are storing all the data that your main computer is storing-so, when one or even more of them fails, the rest of them still have all of your data contained on them.

Yet another better option is storing your data online, on the internet, for which you will be charged a nominal small fee. The best example for this is Yahoo bookmarks and Google documents.
