What Makes a Halloween Costume Sexy?
Everywhere we look, we are dealing with women being called sexy. Sexy movie stars. Sexy singers. Sexy models. The society is constantly throwing out the word sexy, but what does sexy really mean?
Sexy is relative to the location. It is also relative to the occasion or situation. If a female high school student came to school with super tight jeans and a top that showed her midriff, you can be sure that a few teachers might be annoyed, but she wouldn’t be considered unusual. On the other hand, if her female math teacher came to school in the same outfit, she would immediately be chastised for being too sexy for her role as teacher in a high school.
So, what are the elements of dress that are considered sexy? Think of a group of young women at a hot city club. What would they be wearing? Most likely, lots of deep plunging necklines, exposing plenty of you-know-what. Add in some tight jeans or a short skirt, some stilettos, and a dash of perfume, and the average female clubber will definitely be considered sexy by any observer. One of the elements of sexy is that the observers consider it sexy and appropriate. If one of these lovely females suddenly had her mother show up at the same club with the same clothing, the mother would most likely be thought trashy, overdone, or inappropriate. So, again, the role someone plays and the observers’ expectations of people in that role play a big part in what is considered sexy.
What other elements make an outfit sexy? I looked at Yahoo answers where seven women answered the question, “What is the sexiest outfit you own? While one thought an expensive short black dress with her Manolo’s won, others felt that it was any outfit that boosts their self-confidence. Several mentioned boots, leather mini skirts, stilettos, or dark, skinny jeans that boost their bums. If you asked a man what he considered sexy in a woman, he might mention visible body parts rather than the actual clothing.
As we said, sexy is relative to the environment, and it is also relative to the role. In addition to those two, sexy is also relative to the occasion. If a woman attends her child’s PTA meeting wearing a plunging neckline, she will be considered too sexy for the occasion. It is not the right occasion for wearing overtly sexy clothing. However if she were to wear the same plunging neckline to a New Year’s Eve party, her neckline would be “normal” for the occasion. In fact, in addition to the plunging neckline, the woman would also incorporate some of the other elements of sexy dressing.
With all of these expectations, women sometimes just need to break free. They need to become the person they sometimes dream of being. They want to fantasize and be the sexy hot mama that is deep inside of them. Women are so constrained with roles - roles of wife, mother, employee. Each of those roles has expectations. Every age they travel through has additional expectations. As they get into their late twenties and start their professional lives, their options for exploring those fantasies diminish. With every extra year, they assume more roles (wife, mother, etc) and have fewer degrees of freedom with their appearance, their dress, and their expressions. Sometimes women just want to break free of all of these expectations. The old line “girls just wanna have fun” is a great expression for this side of women - the side that just wants to have fun and be fun.
So, women love to wear sexy Halloween costumes so that they can return to their past, return to their dreams, and once more be the sexy woman they have always had inside. They strip their roles, and put on their sexy Pirate costume, or they put on the sexy Playboy costume and they become that woman - they become the sexy pirate. They become Miss October. They become everything that is fun in their personalities. So Halloween is a wonderful time for exploding out of society’s expectations and returning to the fun woman they hold inside of themselves.
So, as Halloween is around the corner, enjoy your sexy side and have fun in your sexy Halloween costume.
